How to prepare for SSC

  1. 1

Master percentage, ratio, profit-loss and time-work for Quant — these four chapters account for 20+ marks in Tier-1.

  2. 2

Solve previous year papers from 2019 onwards daily; SSC repeats question patterns and even exact questions across cycles.

  3. 3

For General Awareness, prioritise static GK (history, polity, geography) over current affairs — it's a higher-yield section.

  4. 4

Time yourself strictly: 60 minutes for 100 questions in Tier-1 works out to 36 seconds per question on average.

  5. 5

Read a newspaper editorial daily (The Hindu or Indian Express) to build vocabulary and comprehension speed for the English section.

Frequently asked questions

What is the age limit for SSC CGL?

The general age range is 18-32 years depending on the post. Age relaxation applies — 5 years for SC/ST, 3 years for OBC, and up to 13 years for PwBD candidates. Some posts like Assistant Audit Officer have narrower bands of 18-30.

Can I apply for SSC exams after 12th?

Yes — SSC CHSL (10+2) and SSC MTS are designed for candidates who have passed 12th. SSC CGL, JE and Stenographer Grade C require a graduation degree.

Is there negative marking in SSC exams?

Yes. Tier-1 of SSC CGL and CHSL carries a penalty of 0.50 marks for every wrong answer. In Tier-2 quant/reasoning sections the penalty is 1 mark, and in English it is 0.25 marks.

How many times can I attempt SSC CGL?

There is no cap on the number of attempts for SSC exams as long as you are within the age limit. Candidates routinely attempt multiple cycles across their eligible years.

Are SSC exams conducted in Hindi?

Yes. SSC CGL, CHSL, MTS and JE papers are bilingual — every question appears in both English and Hindi. Only the English Language section remains English-only.
