National-level entrance tests for undergraduate engineering admissions and postgraduate / PSU recruitment.
This group covers the two main tiers of engineering testing in India. JEE Main and JEE Advanced are gateway exams to the IITs, NITs and IIITs for undergraduate B.Tech programmes. GATE assesses comprehensive understanding of engineering disciplines and is used for M.Tech admissions at IITs / IISc and for direct recruitment into Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) like IOCL, NTPC, BHEL and ONGC.

For JEE Main, prioritise NCERT-level conceptual clarity in Physics and Chemistry before jumping to HC Verma, Irodov or advanced problem books.
For JEE Advanced, solve 10+ years of JEE Advanced papers section-wise; the pattern of integer-answer and multi-correct questions is unique and needs dedicated practice.
For GATE, start with your core branch subjects (Operating Systems, DBMS, Networks, Algorithms for CSE) — they account for 60-65 marks out of 100.
Engineering Mathematics and Aptitude together carry 28 marks in GATE — don't treat them as afterthoughts; score well here and the cutoff is much easier to clear.
Use virtual calculator regularly during GATE practice; the Scilab-based on-screen calculator behaves differently from smartphone calculators and trips up many test-takers.
JEE Main is held twice a year (January and April sessions) and you can appear in consecutive years after Class 12. There is no age limit but eligibility expires 2 years after passing Class 12.
There is no upper age limit for GATE. Candidates in the 3rd year of their bachelor's programme or higher, or those who have already graduated in an eligible discipline, can appear.
JEE Main: 1 mark deducted for each wrong MCQ; numerical-answer questions have no negative marking. GATE: 1/3 mark deducted for 1-mark MCQs and 2/3 mark for 2-mark MCQs; NAT questions carry no penalty.
GATE scores are valid for 3 years from the date of result announcement. PSU recruitments may use a specific year's GATE score — check individual PSU notifications.
No. You must be among the top 2,50,000 JEE Main qualifiers (across all categories) to become eligible for JEE Advanced in the same year.
